Save Current View
For a quantitative analysis tool, the user would always have to apply the same filters to the overall data because the system would not remember them. The solution was to allow them to save multiple views that they could reference later.
There was a design solution already created, but it added an additional UI to apply filters instead of making use of the filters already available on the page. When I took over the project, I worked with the product manager to understand the requirements and redesign the solution.
Instead of repeating elements and information that the original design was doing, I took a step back to evaluate the situation from the user’s shoes. If they were already filtering the data in various ways, why not let them just save it when they are done? Just simply adding a “Save Filter” button was the start of that. Then I considered how to indicate a filter view was applied to the current search and how a user could select that view in the future.
The updated design was then presented to SMEs and a handful of clients. Their feedback was mostly positive and only a few small changes came out of the conversations. Most of those changes ended up being concessions to not move around existing UI elements.
Once the new design was approved, I worked with the visual designer to apply our style guide to the UI. Tablet and mobile breakpoints were also then considered, but not optimized for since users of the qualitative analysis tool are mostly using desktop devices.
